A gradual but steady increase in the use of chemical fertilisers has played a vital role in achieving growth in agricultural productivity. The per hectare consumption of fertilisers in India which was only 0.55 kilograms per hectare in the early fifties has improved to 75.9 kg per hectare in 1993-94.
